Alcohol and Caffeine A Dangerous Combination

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

At one point cosmos and martinis were all the rage – but they have taken a back seat to the newest fad – energy drinks and vodka. Party goers around the country are ordering these combinations because of their ability to get drink and avoid the sleepliness, lack of coordination, and general lethargy that goes along with other alcoholic beverages.

Unfortunately, drinking these types of drinks is not safe, and actually presents a lot of health risks. The main health risk being heart attack and alcohol poisoning.

In addition to being a health risk, many people tend to mask the fact that they have an alcohol addiction with these types of drinks. The only real way to handle an alcohol abuse problem is to enroll in a drug and alcohol rehab.

Every day, on average, 11,318 American youth (12 to 20 years of age) try alcohol for the first time.

Alcohol is by far the most used and abused drug among America’s teenagers. According to a national survey, nearly one third of all high school students reported hazardous drinking during the 30 days prior to the survey.

Children who are drinking alcohol by the 7th grade are more likely to report academic problems, substance abuse, and delinquent behavior in both middle school and high school. By young adulthood, early alcohol use was associated with employment problems, other substance abuse, and criminal and other violent behavior.

Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin drinking at 21.

More than 1,700 college students in the U.S. are killed each year – about 4.65 a day – as a result of alcohol-related injuries.
