April 14, 2008 - One of the largest studies of its kind has found that alcohol is a substantial risk factor for development of the most common type of breast cancer -- the 70 percent of tumors that are classified as positive for both the estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER+/PR+).

Researchers report that even moderate alcohol consumption, defined as one or two drinks per day, increased risk of developing this kind of cancer, and the more a woman drank, the higher her risk. Compared to women who did not drink at all, women who had three or more glasses of alcohol daily had as much as a 51 percent increased risk of ER+/PR+ breast cancer.

April 4, 2008 - ALEXANDRIA - A group of five teens spoke to members of the Southern Campbell County Anti-Drug Coalition about how their peers use alcohol at a town hall meeting about underage drinking April 3.

"It is a big problem at the high school, and there's a lot of parties over the weekend, and people talk about what they had," said Katie Sharp, 18, of Alexandria who is president of the Drug Free Club at Campbell County High School.

And it's not just juniors and seniors participating, it's freshman and sophomores too, she said.

April 4, 2008 - Alcohol is being called the number one date rape drug in New Zealand.

Environmental Science and Research has looked at 538 substance abuse related sexual assaults between 2002 and 2008. They found that in more than 80 percent of the cases the victims were drunk.

Ms Kappatos says cannabis was the second most commonly frequently found drug in the bloodstreams of sex attack victims.

March 21, 2008 - LAFAYETTE -- About 80 percent of all high school students have tried alcohol by the time they reach grade 12, and as many as 70 percent of CU students are classified as being dependent on alcohol, a panel of alcohol and addiction specialists said Thursday.

The panel of doctors, community leaders, school officials and law enforcement personnel spoke to a group of about two dozen Boulder County parents at Lafayette's Centaurus High School about the physiology and psychology of alcohol use among adolescents.

March 21, 2008 - Men's patterns of substance use during their partners' pregnancies were even bleaker. Men typically are not targeted by these campaigns, and their levels of binge drinking, daily smoking and marijuana use remained fairly stable before, during and after pregnancy, the study showed.
This is important, according to the study's lead authors Jennifer Bailey and Karl Hill, because men's substance use may make it harder for women to stop using while they're pregnant and may make it more likely that mothers will resume smoking or drinking after their child is born.

March 15, 2008 - LOS ANGELES—Authorities say they arrested more than 150 people in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Santa Barbara counties for buying minors alcohol.
Officials with the California Alcoholic Beverage Control say the Saturday's sting was the largest operation in state history. Numerous law enforcement agents targeted buyers in 20 different cities.
Minors working with police stood outside liquor stores and asked adults to buy alcohol for them. Those who agreed were cited and arrested.
The penalty for furnishing alcohol to a minor is a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service.

Criminal probe into alcohol death of Alberta woman

March 12, 2008 - The case of a young woman who died of alcohol poisoning after drinking in an Edmonton-area bar is part of a criminal investigation separate from the liquor act charge laid against the bar that allegedly overserved her.
Tammy Kobylka, 22, was pronounced dead at her home in Calmar last Oct. 7. Tests show her blood-alcohol level was five times over the legal limit for driving.

February 21, 2008 - “Underage drinking is a problem in this country, and stopping it is critically important to all of us,” said Guy Smith, writing for alcohol giant Diageo in a recent issue of Capitol Weekly. At least he got this part right because nearly everything else he wrote stretched the bounds of reality.
Underage drinking overall may be declining slightly. But, what was conveniently omitted was that the only group of youth demonstrating an increase in drinking is underage girls. This includes binge drinking.

A young bank worker drank himself to death in a “last man standing” competition inspired by the film American Pie 5, an inquest was told yesterday.
David Reid, 22, a University of Manchester graduate, was a financial recovery specialist looking forward to a bright future.
But on a night in, he and a friend decided to recreate a scene from American Pie 5: The Naked Mile, in which two characters challenge each other to a drinking competition known as “last man standing”.

$1.2 Million Will Target Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders In NY

January 26, 2008 - ALBANY, NY--State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Commissioner Karen M. Carpenter-Palumbo today announced that OASAS is receiving $1.2 million in federal funding for a multi-year effort to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) in New York.
FASD is a disorder caused by a woman's use of alcohol during pregnancy. It is characterized by growth retardation, facial abnormalities, and central nervous system dysfunction and is an irreversible, life-long condition. However, FASD is the only birth defect that can be completely prevented through education of women on the dangers of consuming alcohol while pregnant.
